6 Fruits That You Should Avoid Eating During Pregnancy
In order to ensure that you and your baby are both as healthy as possible during pregnancy, there are some fruits that you’ll want to avoid eating altogether. Some may have allergens in them that can trigger allergic reactions in you or your unborn child, while others contain certain vitamins and minerals that might be harmful to your developing baby. Before you reach for the next piece of fruit that’s placed in front of you, take a moment to check whether it contains one of these six fruits that you should avoid eating during pregnancy.

1) Apples
Apples are not to be eaten during pregnancy. Apples contain high amounts of arsenic that can affect pregnant women. As a matter of fact, they rank #1 on EWG’s list of pesticide-laden produce that women should avoid eating while pregnant or breastfeeding. Arsenic can cause brain damage in children, even at very low levels, so it’s best to avoid apples while pregnant and breastfeeding. The rest of us should probably cut back as well – a single apple may have more than 10 times your daily limit for arsenic. And if you think peeling an apple will get rid of those pesticides, think again – they’re absorbed by the fruit itself! Better safe than sorry...right?
2) Oranges
Oranges are an excellent source of vitamin C, but they’re also high in natural sugars. Some expectant mothers avoid oranges and other citrus fruits during pregnancy because of their link to miscarriages and other reproductive health issues. However, eating a small amount (1/2 cup) each day is considered safe for most women. Do your research before consuming any more than that, though—especially if you have a history of miscarriages or have had problems conceiving. Be sure to drink plenty of water with your orange intake as well; all that sugar can dehydrate you.
3) Strawberries
Strawberries are considered one of nature’s healthiest foods. One cup contains more vitamin C than an orange, as well as a ton of fiber and protein. It also contains ellagic acid, which may protect against certain types of cancer (8). But strawberries aren’t safe to eat during pregnancy. In fact, they can be dangerous! They contain high levels of folic acid (Vitamin B9), which is essential for fetal development in early pregnancy. However, too much folic acid can mask a condition called neural tube defect (NTD) in unborn babies. NTD is when part of your baby’s brain or spinal cord doesn’t form properly while in utero.

4) Papaya
Papaya contains a Proterozoic enzyme called papain. These enzymes help to digest protein but also help to break down collagen and elastin, which are needed for healthy skin, mucous membranes, hair and nails. When you’re pregnant, your body already starts producing these enzymes but when you consume more through fruit such as papaya it can increase your chances of giving birth prematurely. The risk is small but should be taken into consideration if you’re at risk of a premature birth or low birth weight baby. Papaya is also known to be an irritant for people with sensitive stomachs; avoid it during pregnancy if you have stomach issues or bloating problems. If your body is tolerating it well then feel free to enjoy it in moderation. In fact, papaya has many health benefits that make it worth including in your diet. It is high in vitamin C and beta-carotene which both support a healthy immune system while boosting metabolism and helping to fight cancer cells. It also helps to keep blood pressure under control so can be beneficial for women who suffer from hypertension during pregnancy. There are many ways that you can eat papaya too: fresh, dried or frozen (as long as there aren’t any added preservatives). Add slices to smoothies or juices, use dried pieces on salads or add frozen chunks to smoothies for a tropical treat!
5) Peaches
Peaches, plums and nectarines can be enjoyed by pregnant women without worry. They contain a lot of fiber which is great for digestive health during pregnancy. Nuts are also packed with fiber and will help keep you feeling full while providing nutrients that your baby needs. These foods are typically high in fats, so they should only be eaten as part of a well-balanced diet. Peaches in particular contain Vitamin A, folate and iron, which are all essential for pregnant women. However, peaches have a relatively high amount of sugar compared to other fruits. It’s recommended to limit eating too many sweets when expecting because it can lead to gestational diabetes and weight gain. If you do eat peaches, try to consume them in moderation or mix them with other low-sugar fruits like apples or berries. Additionally, there is some evidence that peach pits may cause miscarriage. Even if these claims haven't been confirmed, it's best to err on the side of caution and avoid consuming them altogether just in case.
6) Bananas
Bananas are often viewed as a health food but they're also high in sugar, even more so than many desserts. They also have lots of potassium, but too much of it can be dangerous for your baby's heart. Potassium causes muscles to contract and relax, including your uterus. By keeping things relaxed (and allowing for softening of your cervix), it may cause preterm labor to start, or it could trigger contractions that lead to preterm labor or birth. As you'll see below, there are plenty of other fruits that you should avoid during pregnancy. It's best to stay away from bananas until after you've given birth.
